| About | Now, more then ever, the musical landscape has been crowded by trendy come and goers. All too often we hear and see bands that conform to the same formula. So how does the Southern California quintet Chrysalis distinguish themselves from the thousands of others? For starters, the band employs a wide range of musical influences and techniques. On the group’s self titled debut album, you'll hear everything from funky slap bass, to aggressive metal, to classical piano and strings. Simply put, it sounds like nothing else.
"Of course, our style comes naturally but we do make it a point to at least try to be unique creative-wise," says Elledge. "Ten, twenty, thirty years from now, I want people to listen to our music and enjoy it. You don't get that kind of recognition by making music that's indifferent. Great music is timeless." This philosophy compounded with the band's undying work ethic has helped put them on the musical radar in southern California. Formed in early 2003, Chrysalis originally took shape as a quartet when Elledge had a chance meeting with drummer and guitarist, Billy Norris and Chris Norris at a local concert. Bass player Jared Partee’, and now former guitarist Arsenio Otero were later added to the mix. Soon after, the band headed into the studio to record their first demo. The resulting effort was a 4 song demo that went on to circulate well in the groups’ hometown of Barstow, CA. "Our first demo did well, people liked it, but for us it's a bit painful to listen to," explains Partee’. "These days we laugh when we hear it. We were so young and we've grown so much as musicians since then. I think our decision to start recording so early in our career was probably premature, but at the same time, it helped us get our name out there." Over the next year Chrysalis played numerous shows throughout California, and continued to write and record more material. The band had high standards for themselves which made the creative process strenuous. Every detail of every song was scrutinized. This high pressure situation caused a noticeable amount of tension within the group and ultimately led to the departure of Otero. The loss of Arsenio turned out to be a major turning point in the band’s development. Elledge took over guitar playing duties, and the services of Billy's younger brother Chris were sought out to provide a second guitar player. Not only were the band’s songs becoming more lush, and layered, they we're also becoming more unique in style. With the new lineup in place, the creative juices started flowing more easily. The band began accumulating more and more material, and before they knew it the studio became their second home. It was during this period that keyboardist Noel Castillo (a.k.a. Sykodelik) was finally added to the group. A friend of both Noel and Jesse from school introduced the two. “I was originally writing keyboards for the album but I knew that we would eventually need someone to play it live. Noel came in on his first recording session and nailed all of the songs better than I ever could have, so he took over in that department right away and basically just fit right in. It’s almost like it was just meant to be, says Jesse. “He recorded keyboards to the already written songs but I wish he could have contributed a little more in the song-writing process on the album like he does now because we’ve been coming up with a lot of good material.” "There was a time period when we were really in a groove as far as song writing goes," says Norris, “when the new line up came together, it seemed like we just started to gel and truly find our identity as a band.” It took a while before completing the album so there was much time to start writing new songs. “We’re always writing new material. Our specialty as a band is our ability to produce,” says Noel. With Chrysalis’ capability to appeal to fans of many musical genres and their undeniable talent to write great music, Chrysalis is sure to have a bright future in their musical career. |
